THE UP'S AND DOWN'S OF BEING A WRITER

Nothing comes to you.

You stare at the blank screen.

You edit the same sentence over and over again.

You write words to fulfill some abstract notion of “word count.”

Just to say you’ve accomplished something today.

Your characters run away with the story.

The story veers off-track.

One particular character does everything in their power to sabotage you.

Another character wants more face time.

You think your writing is brilliant.

You think your writing sucks.

You give up in despair.

You start over.

You try again.

Prose flows.

Miracle.

The end.
